Bob Hoffman (Dover) Branch YMCA Preschool

We offer a part day preschool program at the Bob Hoffman (Dover) YMCA branch. We strive to meet

the social, emotional, physical and cognitive needs of children in a safe and nurturing learning environment

   for children ages 2-5.

As a YMCA program, we will promote the YMCA values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility through our actions and words. Since children learn best by being actively involved, a “hand-on” approach is used in all areas of the curriculum. We believe in learning through play.

At the Bob Hoffman YMCA Preschool, we encourage each child to develop

·          A sense of belonging

·          The capacity to trust people and feel secure with others when away from home

·          A curiosity about the world

·          The ability to take pleasure in learning and exploring the world

·          Independence

·          A positive sense of self and control over one's own behavior

·          The ability to comprehend language and events, and to express oneself effectively

Our preschool is made possible through the support and efforts of many local businesses and individuals who appreciate the value of a solid preschool education to prepare children for a successful school career.

   Our Curriculum

We encourage children to explore the world around them by exposing them to a variety of experiences and media. Math activities help each child learn to count and recognize numbers, shapes, and sizes.   Language Arts incorporates dramatic play, storytelling, puppets, rhymes, finger plays, expressing thoughts and feelings, and recognizing letters. Art activities encourage creativity, color recognition, and the development of fine motor skills, including early writing skills. Music is used throughout the program to foster music appreciation and develop students’ listening skills and ability to follow directions. Children discover science by studying the weather, learning how plants and animals grow, and exploring how the world around us changes. Children learn to appreciate the world around them by developing an understanding of how their families, friends, community helpers, and organizations come together to build their community. Our 4/5’s and Pre-K classes have Gym Class and French & Sign Language built into their curriculum weekly.

York YMCA Child Care Center
The YMCA of York County has been providing a quality, affordable child care program to families since the 1960’s. The Y’s Child Care Center’s primary purpose is to provide a quality early learning experience in an environment where parents will know their children are safe and nurtured. This child-centered program provides opportunities for growth, hands-on exploration and child-led learning through play.
Our child care prgoram is licensed by the PA Department of Human Services. At 12-months and walking, children transition to our toddler room where exploration, social skills and language development are key focus points. As skills develop, older toddlers starting at 24-months, begin to work on toilet training. Once potty trained, children participate in weekly swimming lessons.
In addition, the York Branch YMCA has two preschool classrooms for children ages three to five. Using the Creative Curriculum and learning centers, lesson plans are developed around the observed interests of the children. We strive to develop unique and enriching activities that encompass creative thinking, exploration of science and mathematics, inquiry and discovering, beginning literacy and community involvement. Swimming is also part of weekly care.
The preschool classrooms implement the P.A.T.H.S. (Promoting Alternative Thinking Strategies) Curriculum to enhance social emotional development. Within this curriculum children learn to recognize their feelings and appropriate ways to express them.
