Southern Community Services (SCS) is a United Way funded program that provides essential social and support services to low and moderate income residents of southern York County living in the Southern, Southeastern, Dallastown, and Red Lion school districts. Formally a program of Penn-Mar Human Services, SCS became a program of the Southern Branch YMCA on November 1, 2017.
For more than 30 years, SCS has assisted residents to overcome barriers and achieve a greater level of independence by educating individuals in financial literacy, supporting the application process for various government programs and offering limited direct financial assistance. The program also assists families in crisis through life management programs like short-term counseling, food distribution, back-to-school and holiday programs.
The goal of SCS is to educate and empower clients to move them from poverty to sustainability. By providing case management services, SCS can help clients assess their current situation, develop a plan to overcome the challenges, coordinate services that can help them move forward, and oversee the implementation of the plan.
It is only through the support of the community that SCS can provide these services. Many community organizations such as churches, local municipalities, schools and individuals, give of their time and financial resources to support this program. To find out how you can get involved, please contact the SCS Director, Susan Eckhart, at 717-235-0446 x22.
