Y Housing Resources (YHR) is a strategic partnership between the Y’s Community Development Corporation (YCDC), and the Housing Initiatives Community Development Corporation (HIDCD).
The mission of YHR is to couple affordable housing with the provision of supportive services to create stable and long-term living for York County residents.
The Y makes strengthening communities our cause. In part, this is accomplished by offering affordable housing options to low- to middle-income families and through so many other programs that promote a healthy spirit, mind and body. For more than 20 years the YMCA and the YCDC has been providing safe, clean and affordable housing for York County’s workforce.

Home Ownership Opportunities

To promote homeownership and neighborhood stabilization, YCDC is selling completely rehabilitated and new construction single family homes in the Salem Square neighborhood of York City.

The homes feature an open floor plan, three and four bedrooms, one and a half baths, modern kitchens with energy efficient appliances, wall to wall carpeting, dedicated laundry room, outdoor space and off-street parking. The homes range in size from 2,400 to 3,700 square feet and start in the mid-high $70’s. Mortgages can be as low as $500 if property owners apply and receive the County’s Residential Tax Abatement Program (RETAP).

Rental Housing Options

YHR offers a mix of single, two-bedroom and three-bedroom rental units in varying locations. The units are conveniently located in downtown York City and Hanover borough, within walking distance to many York City & County employers and Rabbit Transit bus routes.

SMB Properties Apartments

SMB Properties Inc. is a 31-unit scattered site residential and commercial redevelopment project which was completed in 2001. The 31 units are a mix of single, two-bedroom and three-bedroom units located above retail store fronts on the 200 and 300 blocks of West Market Street and West King Street in York City. Amenities in the units include historic architecture, hardwood floors, updated HVAC and off street parking. The units have on-call maintenance for daytime, weekend and emergency maintenance needs. These units also include gym membership at the YMCA of York and York County’s downtown branch location.

Historic Fairmount Apartments

The Historic Fairmount Apartments were renovated in 2006. This site is located on the 400 Block of North Beaver Street in historic York City and consists of a quaint collection of Victorian Style homes with a mix of 38 single, two-bedroom and-three bedroom rental units. Historic Fairmount apartments boasts the following amenities: off street parking, outdoor space, porches, wall to wall carpeting, on-site laundry facilities, air conditioning, energy efficient gas heat and hot water, electric ranges, refrigerators, mini-blinds, convenient access to parks and playgrounds and within walking distance to elementary schools.

Richard A. McAllister Inn and Apartments

The McAllister Inn and Apartments are located in Hanover, Pennsylvania and consist of 34 single bedroom units for potential applicants aged 55 years and older and a maximum income of less than 50% of the area median income. Permanently disabled applicants aged 40 years and older making less than 50% area median income limit may also qualify.

Newberry Street Apartments

The Newberry Street apartments are 9 market-rate one- and two-bedroom rental units located on North Newberry Street directly across from the YMCA’s Downtown branch location in the heart of York City. The units are newly renovated and include: central air, wall to wall carpeting, washer/dryer combo and off street parking.

YMCA Men’s Residence

Originally constructed in 1925, the YMCA has completed thorough renovations to establish 120 single room occupancy units for rent. Each room is fully furnished with a single bed, chest of drawers, a desk, chair and telephone with local access and voicemail. Each floor has a fully renovated bathroom, laundry room, kitchenette and lounge area with cable TV and DVD player. Vending facilities are also available on each of the 4 floors. The lower levels of the building contain not only residence rooms, but also an office area, visitor’s lounge, game room, and a full-service kitchen. All community areas are handicap accessible along with a designated number of rooms.

A case manager is available on-site to assist any resident requesting support.

The YMCA also partners with the Housing Authority to provide 46 rooms dedicated to individuals receiving assistance from the Section 8 program.

Those wishing to participate in this program can pick up an application at the YMCA men’s residence located at 310 W. Philadelphia Street, York, PA.

All applicants must be able to supply the following:

  • Picture I.D.
  • Social Security Number
  • Income information (to be verified independently by the YMCA)
  • Asset (bank account) information (to be verified independently by the Y)
  • Verification of homelessness

 

The application process can take several days for completion. For men requiring immediate shelter, the YMCA has six emergency rooms available for residence up to 30 days. Emergency rooms are available on a first-come, first-serve basis and are accessible to anyone.
